FGD facilitation script template is a worksheet for applying Focus Group Discussion in meetings or individual work. For the overall duration of the method, use “Illustrative planning durations, not common standards: preparation 1–2 weeks, sessions 90–120 minutes, analysis 2–3 weeks” as a reference, adjusting for scale and resources. Fill in what you know provisionally and leave unresolved matters as questions to check next.
When this worksheet is useful
- Explore diverse opinions, shared understandings and disagreements within a group
- Understand beneficiaries' or stakeholders' perceptions of the program
- Use group atmosphere to elicit topics difficult in individual interviews
Participants and preparation
A moderator able to facilitate dialogue and a recorder. Set participant and group numbers according to depth, differing positions and accessibility.
Bring the materials used for decisions, existing data, and differing stakeholder views to help complete the worksheet.
Suggested order

- 2. Ground rules: read at the openingConfirm rules communicated to everyone at the start
- 3. Discussion guide with timingEnter estimated minutes for each question in parentheses
- 4. Statement record formAssistant records live; assign pseudonymous participant codes P1–P10

Signs the worksheet is ready for review
- FGD transcripts by group
- Observation notes and field notes
- Thematic analysis report including cross-group comparison
Cautions for review
- Do not equate majority opinion with truth. Agreement processes themselves are data; record minority views.
- Mixed supervisors/subordinates or professionals/affected people can inhibit dialogue. Examine composition beforehand.
- Moderators may steer toward their hypotheses. Review guides and use neutral questions.

Change history
- — Checked sources for definitions and conditions and added fictional examples, judgment rationales and completed entries for every field. Revised unsupported historical or uptake claims. Reviewed procedures and cautions, adjusting fixed counts, thresholds and institutional generalizations. Preserved field positions, types and counts while revising fixed conditions and thresholds.
- — Clarified analysis approaches, recording deadlines, participant-count scope and response-rate assumptions based on focused follow-up FW-U01–U05. Preserved existing fields and did not declare numerical guides inherently wrong.
